If I remember correctly, that phrase, "not as I did," reflects how Dorothy entered Elysium, Leaf's garden, after losing everything in the real world and being taken to an asylum. After reading The Wizard of Oz, her heart breaks; she longs to be free and live adventures far from four sealed walls, so in a fit of despair, she prays in unison. And that's where Leaf appears, stripping her of reality and making her play a role with her foolish pupil.
