I’ve been writing a story about a girl who has to maintain multiple superhero identities, and she refuses to use one of them due to accidentally killing someone the first time she uses that identity. One of her biggest character arcs is learning how to use that superhero identity and coming to terms with the fact that it is a part of her just as much as any of the other superhero identities after a broken arm makes it the only one she can effectively fight with. It’s still in pretty early production though so I’ll probably add more details later down the line

Exactly! The trauma explains why they are the way they are but who they are and how they’ve chosen to cope is way more fascinating and should be shown and explored.

I know this wasn’t the point, but I think I just realized that I’m in the “super easy” category 😅 I wonder what I’ve buried that caused that lol

My OC was ignored a lot as a child especially because of his strange impulsive behavior so affection isn’t the norm for him. As he grows up he doesn’t often stay with any group of people or form attachment because of the way he was taught to see himself and others. He just kinda thinks he doesn’t have the capacity for real love because he was alienated and convinced he was dangerous as a child.

Spent a lot of time on my main character’s traumatic backstory. Looked at it proudly and went “Fantastic! And then from then on he’ll remember NONE of that! I’m so good at this.” The side eyes ive gotten for that😂😂😂

Fantastic examples! This helped me see the concept so clearly, I should be able to replicate it in my own characters! Once school starts back, anyways. These kids don't let me write. 😭😂

My character's mom died. That's not interesting but it affects her and her dad's relationship. She blames him for her death and he dove deeper into work to forget about it.

one of my characters have a has a tragic backstory but I think the most interesting thing is the dreams that they're having and the fact that they're dying and bringing magic back to Earth every time they die in a dream

Oh I adore writting traumatic backstories and then going, “aight, now how can I mess with their psychology based on the messed up stuff I added in their past”

One thing I love when writing is having the backstory, yes, BUT my FAVORITE is being able to write how it affects my characters. One of my characters has been so heavily affected by the trauma of his father never being there when he was a kid and then finding out he’s a terrible person is to take it out on himself (it’s important to know he looks like a mini clone of his dad which is part of why he took out the frustration on himself) because he doesn’t know how else to deal with it and then the pain from doing that comes back to haunt him along side the childhood trauma. Basically what I’m saying is that writing how your character reacts to their trauma is honestly BETTER than writing the tragic backstory because you get to see how it breaks them

My character has trauma from it and must overcome it. It gives her scars along her face and she only reveals her past to the MC after she’s overcome it, which gives him the opportunity to relate and move on together.
