I’m 39. 12 years ago I was married to a man who I bought a house with, he built a very successful business, we bought a nice car, we had two beautiful children and we were doing well with savings, going on holidays etc. Then one day he walked out on us. He put the business into debt then filed for bankruptcy. We lost everything, the house, the money, the car and I became the sole parent of the kids who would both be diagnosed with autism. Now at 39 I rent a tiny granny flat, i can’t work because one of my kids is too high needs, we live on the poverty line, I have no savings. I own nothing of financial value. My point is, even if you manage to get your life together while you are young it can all still be taken away from you in an instant. If I can put a roof over our head, feed and clothe us, and we have our health, then that’s enough. I have pretty much given up on having anything more.
