$80,000 or $250,000. Same stone, same quality, 0.02 carats of difference. The market says that gap is worth $170,000. Irrational? Only if you think the market prices stones. It doesn't. It prices thresholds. The 3-carat mark is one of the most significant weight points in colored gemstones. Crossing it doesn't just add weight. It moves the stone into a different tier of buyer, a different set of briefs, and a different category of demand. A brand commissioning a collection around a 3-carat centerpiece cannot substitute a 2.99. The brief says 3 carats. The stone either meets it or it doesn't. So the $250,000 price isn't paying for 0.02 extra carats of material. It's paying for access to the buyer pool that only opens at 3.00 and above. The private buyer argument exists and it's real. If you're acquiring a stone for yourself and you have no intention of ever reselling it, the 2.99 at $80,000 is an extraordinary piece of value. The visual difference is invisible. The quality is identical. You get everything the stone has to offer at a fraction of the above-threshold price. But investment logic runs the other way. In the B2B market and in serious investment contexts, 2.99 carats is not 3 carats. It's closer to 2 carats in terms of how the market categorizes and prices it. I would never buy a 2.99 for a client looking to hold and eventually sell. And I wouldn't buy one for inventory either. The liquidity profile is wrong. These stones move slowly, even at significant discounts to comparable above-threshold material. The math in this example makes the point clearly. A 30% price gap that reflects what should be a marginal weight difference is not irrationality. It's the market correctly pricing the difference between a stone that fits standard briefs and a stone that doesn't. If you ever want to sell, that distinction matters more than the 0.02 carats.
