@farmerjessjones: “Let me hug the baby…” 🥺 Rhythm gives the best love smooshes 🫠🥰 Baby Lucas thought Rhythm’s style of showing affection was a little ‘full-on’ at first, but now… I see his little hand streeeeeetching out soooo far, so he can pat her 🐴🥰 This behaviour from Rhythm (I’ve shown before), isn’t something horses typically do to one another (curling the neck around another to hold them against their chest, while the body is relaxed, energy is soft, the eyes are softly blinking). But it shows something really cool about the way these animals learn and communicate 😍 Horses are incredibly social. They learn what different horses prefer, whether it’s grooming or simply standing quietly together. They then adjust their behaviour for that specific horse, to try to connect with them. As their bond develops, they adapt further, creating unique gestures specific to each horse. It’s like when you make a new friend and then create inside jokes, where the two of you communicate with just a glance - a glance where you both know what the other is thinking! Horses do this with humans too. How cool is that! When they seem to meet us half way in communicating - showing a human-like gesture - they’re not ‘trying to be human’ or use human gestures with the same meanings we attach to them. Instead, they actively adapt their communication style to find what we positively respond to, to create a feeling of closeness. But don’t we all try to make someone feel at ease when they matter to us? It’s truly magical to witness how, when you give a horse space to initiate interactions without demanding anything, how they try different gestures to forge a bond.
