@socalgastrodoc: Here’s what you need to know to minimize the risk of explosive diarrhea from Cyclospora as a gastroenterologist: 1. Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that gets into food through trace fecal contamination somewhere along the supply chain — you can't reliably wash it off, and it causes watery diarrhea that can drag on for weeks, sometimes improving and then relapsing. 2. This outbreak is a big one — thousands of cases across roughly 30 states, Michigan hit hardest — and no single food or brand has been named yet, so I'm thinking in categories, not avoiding one product. 3. My rule until it settles: cook it or peel it. Heat is the only reliable kill step, so cooked veg, soups, and curries are all still on my plate, along with fruit I can peel (bonus points if the peel is thick and able to scrub). 4. What I'm skipping raw for now: cilantro, basil, berries, leafy greens, bagged salad mixes and anything with pre-made raw veggies e.g. salsa. None of this is a reason to fear fruit and vegetables — just cook them a little more intentionally for a few weeks until we get more info. Alex :
This is so incredibly frustrating. So many people depend on precut and bagged options because of disability/age and now none of it is safe.

of course raw fruit and veggies become a diarrhea hazard when it’s 100 degrees outside. who wants to be eating soup and baked apples right now???

My pediatrician said to feed him the fruit. Wash it. Until we know the source we can’t just eliminate it all.
