In a deeply disturbing video, a Turkish child in Komotini, Greece, is cornered by far-right extremists and made to chant ‘Long live Kasidiaris’ - a reference to former Golden Dawn member Ilias Kasidiaris. The child, visibly frightened, is mocked and told to run away. Although Golden Dawn was declared a criminal organization in 2020, far-right groups, including their sympathizers, continue to exert influence in Komotini and beyond. Their sister party, ELAM, now holds the position as the third-largest party in South Cyprus. The Turkish community in Western Thrace faces relentless persecution by the Greek government - discriminated against for their ethnicity and identity. This video serves as a haunting reminder of what Turkish Cypriots might have faced had Türkiye not intervened in 1974. For them, this is an alternate reality that was narrowly avoided.
