The first step of planning a Great Migration safari is deciding when you are going to go. Because it is a cyclical event that takes place throughout the year, the herds of wildebeest are continuously on the move. That means the experience you'll have each month is different. We know it can be confusing, so we asked safari specialist Rory to help break it down for you. There are four general seasons: Calving Season (Dec - Mar): At its peak, 8,000 wildebeest are born each day in the Southern Serengeti, starting the cycle. This is a very active time, especially for predators, including cheetahs, lions, and hyenas. Green Season (Apr - Jun): The long rains mean the landscape is at its most beautiful. The wildebeest begin their movement north, with many herds heading up through the central Serengeti and the western corridor. River Crossing Season (Jul - Sep): This is the peak of the drama, when the herds arrive at the Mara River frontier. It's busier during this time of year, but this gives you the best chance to see the wildebeest brave the steep cliffs and crocodiles. Return Season (Oct - Nov): After the rains, the herds return to the southern Serengeti’s fresh, short-grass plains and the northern Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where they settle to graze, preparing for the upcoming calving season.
