Koos Radebe is a South African radio broadcasting legend, widely known as the “godfather of Metro FM." He started as a sports broadcaster and commentator on Radio Zulu (now Ukhozi FM). His passion for soccer (he played as a striker and midfielder in high school and tertiary levels) led him into radio. In the early days, he often commentated from the stands among spectators. In 1986, the SABC appointed him Programme Manager (and he effectively served as founding Station Manager) of the new Radio Metro (later Metro FM). The station launched on 1 September 1986 as an Adult Contemporary/R&B-format commercial station aimed at a predominantly Black urban audience aged 16–34, partly to compete with stations like Radio Bop. Radebe had only about four months to recruit and train staff (especially English-speaking presenters), handle programming, marketing, and more. He built the station from the ground up, and it quickly became highly successful and influential. Many prominent South African media personalities credit him with mentoring and launching their careers. Later career 1994: Appointed General Manager of SABC Commercial Radio Services (including Metro FM, 5FM, Highveld Stereo, and Radio 2000). 1996: Took over the SABC National PBS Radio portfolio. 1999: Became the first Director of the SABC’s TopSport department (radio and television sport). He helped expand listenership for sports like cricket, rugby, and tennis on Black radio stations and covered the 1998 Soccer World Cup. After leaving broadcasting, he joined Tracker Network as CSI Director (retiring around 2012). He later ran his own communications and marketing consultancy (1KR Communications Pty Ltd), focusing on CSI, enterprise development, corporate events, media relations, and broadcast development. He is based in the Port Edward area of KwaZulu-Natal. Awards and recognition Lifetime Achievement Award – MTN/Telkom Radio Awards (2013) Inducted into the South African Sports Hall of Fame (2008, for contributions to sport) KE Masinga Radio Awards Lifetime Achiever (Ukhozi FM, 2006) JPS Cup Radio Man of the Year (1985) Lifetime Achievement Award – Department of Sports & Recreation (2019) Outstanding Contribution to the Arts & Culture Sector – Department of Arts & Culture (2014) Philanthropy Award (2012) He is remembered as a humble mentor who shaped modern South African commercial radio, particularly Metro FM’s identity and talent pipeline. Recent tributes (including around the station’s anniversaries) continue to credit him as the key figure who built it from scratch.
