At 15 years old, as a sophomore in high school, I set out to build something that could make a real impact — a solar-powered electric blanket designed to provide portable warmth using renewable energy. For the majority of the school year, I worked relentlessly on designing, prototyping, testing circuitry, managing battery storage, and figuring out how to safely integrate solar charging into a flexible heating system. By God’s grace, I was able to complete a fully working prototype — the one displayed in this video. During the patent process — something not many people around me had experience navigating — I was learning in real time how innovation extends beyond building. It involves protection, research, documentation, and patience. Then in August, I came across something incredible. A brilliant 12-year-old inventor, Rebecca Young, had created a solar-powered blanket as well. Instead of discouraging me, it inspired me. It reminded me that innovation is not about being the only one with an idea — it’s about contributing to solutions that matter. Seeing another young engineer thinking the same way pushed me to keep building and exploring new projects. This project was one of the defining experiences of my high school journey so far. It taught me resilience, technical discipline, and the importance of protecting and sharing ideas responsibly. More builds to come. — Favor Brunner @Julian Brown #robotics #engineering #black #invention #BlackTikTok
