The Monster Study (Iowa 1939) deliberately told fluent kids that they had speech defects, repeatedly reinforcing this false diagnosis to see whether suggestion and negative feedback alone could induce stuttering. Fluent kids developed speech anxiety, self‑consciousness, and in some cases real stuttering‑like behaviors. Some kids stopped speaking entirely.

I hate the fact that because of these incidents we can write books about it and educate ourselves as some form of „evolution“. As a German I also hate how nazis did extremely brutal experiments and research which eventually contributed to the general science, for example hypothermia research. Later it was used by the US Air Force for survival guidelines.

Oh, did they not include dive tables and the bends? I believe that was a military study that experimented on young men to see how long they could stay down before getting nitrogen poisoning. I learned about that in high school and that profoundly shape my trust of our ya’ know.

i wanted to learn why it's a thing in scandinavia that we're only supposed to eat candy on saturdays(we call it lørdagsgodt or saturday sweets) when i found out it's not a universal thing. it was very much the same as these experiments. in an institution for the intellectually disabled they were testing the effect of sugar on teeth by feeding them extra sticky toffee. pretty much all of them lost all their teeth. not sure if there was a whistleblower though.

this is so horrific. and I agree, this is wrong. but it triggered a memory I saw a video about a surgeon. and they said that they have to remove themselves mentally - to stop seeing the person on the table as a person - in order to do what they do. Because the human brain naturally screams out at you to stop when you are cutting into, and doing things like that, to another human. But they have to in order to so something good for them.
