I hear this with fast food, not restaurants. A lot of people struggling financially will admit that a $10 fast food meal is cheaper than groceries for home cooked meals (bc it can be—it’s the cycle of poverty where spending more at once will be cheaper in the long run but a lot of people don’t have that initial income so they do the quicker option that’s cheaper in the moment, even if it’s more expensive over time) and then get blasted for it. I’ve never heard anyone say that about *restaurants* though. Def feels like either OP misunderstood or it’s a case of one single person saying this lmao

I spent 50 bucks on sandwich ingredients the other day. I could get a subway footlong meal for like 15 bucks 😭 sure I can make like 12 sandwiches, but I don't want 12 sandwiches ☠️

Steak at home costs the same as steak from a restaurant if you Just get the steak in my area right now. But as soon as it becomes a meal it is cheaper at home 🤷. I will say this if you need something fast then fast food is the cheapest option if you want a good quantity of things. Even tv dinners have gone way up in cost while a lot of fast food places haven’t as much. It all depends on what your making and where you live and what you mean by restaurant. Also chain restaurants are often either much more expensive or much cheaper depending on your area. if the protein is of a higher quality and you can’t buy it in bulk then restaurants are cheaper, if you can then it’s cheaper at home 🤷

People say that because when you buy ingredients for a single meal costs as much as a single meal out, but what they fail to consider is you have enough ingredients for 4-6 other meals.

Sometimes Asian food can be cheaper. During the holidays when I have to work 60 hours a week, I order from my favorite Korean place and buy 2-3 meals and split those meals into 2, making it 4-6 meals. Wound up being like $10 per meal which isn’t bad!

my MIL says that she also thinks it's feasible for us to just buy dinner every night from the grocery store and doesn't understand why my husband and I do big grocery shopping trips

Buying groceries to cook at home then getting fast food while the food rots in your fridge is as expensive as going to restaurants.

I think part of what makes grocery shopping feel more expensive is that you're buying in advance and don't always get to the food before it goes bad. or throw out leftovers after meal prepping. it's also about quality, you can make white people tacos at home for cheap, but if you want chipotle quality ingredients, it's about a wash

the only time I really found it to be expensive to cook at home vs going out was when I was single, mainly cuz its really hard to cook for 1 person

I've heard people claim that many times, usually in conversations about healthier eating 😅 Like you're allowed to say "I don't care that deep" or "good for you, it's not for me" but people get defensive sometimes and make this claim.

in many developing nations and some developed nations, it is cheaper to buy from a restaurant (or food stalls) than to cook at home. to cook at home you have to have the following: 1) a home 2) a kitchen 3) gas and electricity 4) cooking utensils 5) groceries. i know not this situation, but i think this is an interesting and important thing to consider and remember
