We didn’t bond of shopping and gossip. We have boundaries, chores, rules. We didn’t prioritize friendship over parenting. We encouraged work ethic and didn’t enable lack of it.

going through this with my 15 year old daughter. she had accountability here. told to do chores and basic showering and hygiene. she prefers her TBI father who doesn't enforce anything and it's so frustrating and maddening.

Nah. As the kid that went through it, I chose my alcoholic father over my emotionally abusive mother. Specifically because although he drank his weight in Budweiser never once did he stick me on the back burner. He took me fishing, made sure my homework was done and even took me to trainers to help me expand my training for MMA. All the while my mother took my emotional support dog “to be put down” and ha d him gone for four days because I said I was going to move in with my father. Or she would randomly disappear, or threaten to have me arrested for not wanting to be with her. She had a stable job and a solid income and there was always food at her house. I’ve never felt more hated by a person than I did her. She was “stable” but my dad was safe. It wasn’t the chaos that made it safe it was the fact that he actually wanted me and constantly went out of his way to prove it even in his active addiction.

Yeah no. I didn’t want to see my dad as a teen because he didn’t do anything with us. And I was constantly told I was a mistake as a child. My mom was definitely the stricter parent.

My daughter stopped talking to her mom. But because her effort and consistency was never there. Children see effort.

I absolutley feel this, going through this with my son right now, his mom filled his head with all kinds of terrible things about me. He can pretty much do whatever he wants over there while I have structure and rules at my house.

No ma'am my mom and dad were alcoholic and drug addicts. I ran the streets and did what I wanted. Then chose to move in with my brother and grandmother that I have strict rules, curfew etc.... I would have made the same choice every time. I was safe and held accountable. Can't imagine if where I would be had I stayed with my parents.
