As you all know, I’m usually the first person to challenge negative stereotypes. Most stereotypes are unfair, misleading, or simply don’t stand up to scrutiny. But every now and then, there’s one that’s rooted in enough shared experience to make you smile. For me, that’s “Zambian Time.” 🇿🇲😂 Now, before anyone gets offended, I’m obviously talking in general terms. There are plenty of punctual Zambians, especially in professional settings. But socially? That’s a different story! If you’re meeting someone for coffee, heading out for a meal, meeting for a drink, or even turning up for a game of football, don’t be surprised if “I’ll be there in five minutes” actually means “See you in a couple of hours!” The funniest part is that it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. You soon realise there’s no point arriving on time because nobody else will. Before long, you’ve been in Zambia long enough that you start doing exactly the same thing yourself. You leave later, arrive later, and somehow everyone still turns up at roughly the same time! I spend a lot of my time challenging stereotypes because most of them deserve to be challenged. But this is one where, after living in Zambia for many years, I have to confess that my own experience suggests there’s at least a grain of truth behind it. To all my Zambian friends… don’t worry, I still love you. Just let me know what day you actually plan to arrive! 😄🇿🇲 #Zambia #ZambianTime #AfricanHumour #CulturalDifferences #LifeInZambia
