@hewittforiowa: ⚡🤖Let’s talk data centers! 🤖⚡ When construction of new data centers are brought up, there are always a lot of opinions, concerns and emotions. And there should be! There are few issues that deserve universal support or resistance, and this is not exception. First, we must give everyone the benefit of the doubt and assume good faith. People opposed to data centers are genuinely concerned about environmental impacts and are not just fear-mongering Luddites. Those in support of data centers honestly see them as a way of improving their city and community and are not corrupt anti-environmentalists. Second, there are many pros and cons to both sides. It would do everyone will to acknowledge the legitimacy of the points each side is making. Dogma rarely results in balanced, effective long-term solutions. Third, I believe the Iowa legislature should provide regulations and safeguards that can act as a baseline for all communities in Iowa who may want to consider projects like this. If the state provides minimum allowed requirements for data centers, citizens and local governments can approach this issue without it feeling like a free-for-all - a little support and guidance will go a long way! Notice these thoughts are all about process - I’m not going to try and give a simple answer to a new and difficult problem where the factors change greatly from one place to another. What I can give is consistency in how I’ll approach issues like this: with thoughtfulness, grace, consideration and respect.
