The creator of the work, Rifujin na Magonote, clarified in several interviews that Rudeus is not a 34-year-old mind trapped in a child's body. Upon reincarnation, his past memories were transferred, but his physical brain and hormones developed from scratch. His impulses, fears, involuntary erections, and emotional awkwardness are those of a child and then those of a teenager. His brain processed love and attraction at the pace of his biological growth, not like a 34-year-old adult. On Earth, the original Rudeus locked himself in his room at 14 or 15 after suffering severe trauma from bullying. Chronologically, he lived to be 34, but emotionally, he never matured beyond that of a high school student. He had no work, romantic, or social experience as an adult. Upon arriving in the new world, his emotional maturity progressed at the same rate as his physical age.
