The only thing with Cardigan and August is that (with Betty) they’re a connected story right? And Cardigan is that start of the story, so wouldn’t make toooo much sense that you start off with August imo

ME! is a perfect song choice for a lead single. she wasn't chasing hits, she was chasing bops. LWYMMD was dark and edgy, since the reputation era is also dark and edgy, so choosing ME! as the lead for Lover is a great choice. she needed to pick a song so good and catchy and vibrant and fun to open the Lover era, because it's meant to be welcomed with glitters and rainbows, and Cruel Summer isn't a strong opener for a lead single. heck, it's not even that good to be picked at all, it's just over hyped, and had it not blow up, the fandom would've been silent and start treating Lover the way it's meant to be treated.
