There is always a moment of excitement when Sterling and Simba come walking towards us. Their powerful presence reminds you instantly why lions are known as the kings of the African bush. On this particular day, one of the lionesses joined them along the way. What followed was a beautiful display of lion communication as they stopped to sniff and smell one another before continuing their walk together. Many people don’t realize that scent plays a huge role in a lion’s social life. Lions use scent to identify pride members, determine reproductive status, recognize familiar individuals, and gather information about where another lion has been. A simple sniff can tell them far more than we could ever imagine. Watching these interactions is one of my favourite parts of spending time with our lions at Felidae. It reminds me that lions are not just powerful predators; they are highly social animals with strong family bonds and complex relationships within their pride. Moments like these allow us to share the natural behaviours of these incredible cats and help visitors understand why protecting lions is so important. Every interaction, every greeting, and every scent check is part of the story of what makes lions such fascinating animals.
