@kirsten.sumnermd: “If it hurts, just splint it.” ❌ That’s one of the biggest myths I treat as a hand surgeon. The wrong splint—or even the right splint worn too long—can lead to finger stiffness that is harder to treat than the injury itself. If you injure your finger it’s ok to put a splint on for a couple of days while waiting to get in for a hand surgery consultation. But do not wear a finger splint for weeks on end without the guidance of a hand specialist. #splint #handsurgeon #medicaleducation #tiktokdoc #medicalmyths

Thank you! As a 7 year UC PA I always get funny looks from patients when I explain why in their case we should not splint their finger

1000% correct. Best answer is splint to protect but take off frequently for ROM 8-10x/day and wean out of splint as soon as pain allows.

How long would you say is a "long" duration? Often my patients are worried about bumping their contused finger and would like some sort of protection.

I see this after my daughters hand got hit with a soccer ball and is a bit swollen but moving fine and no pain until it’s pressed I was debating going in for it. Is this my sign 🙃🫣

It’s super painful too. My pinky got splinted for eight weeks. I had two pins in it. I broke it at the knuckle and the knuckle went to the opposite side of your hand for my double bite on my wrist and now my pinky sticks up and I gotta start physical therapy, which is going to be really painful.

urgent care PA- I have started giving therapy putty to a lot of finger injuries. discuss with the patient to try to use the putty as their finger(s) improved to prevent exactly this. think that's okay?

Hey doc I was uplugging a forklift and the battery blew up on me and shocked me and I only had a tiny cut and a tiny burn. I don’t have no physical injuries that I can see but my pinky and ring finger shakes now after I do anything with my hand can you help me with a few questions?

Thank you for your content — it’s great. I work in UC and see a fair amount of occ med . If you’re repairing a finger laceration, especially one crossing the DIP or PIP joint, how long do you typically recommend splinting, if at all? I completely agree that I see this fairly often where a patient comes back for suture removal and now we’re discussing an ortho/PT referral d/t decreased ROM after being immobilized.
