I signed the petition months ago, something needs to change that’s for sure. My house was valued at £95000 in 1991. My council tax is now a whopping £3450 a year, band E Gateshead council. It’s worse than having a mortgage and I’m now an oap.

Proportional tax is still unfair as is LVT. Owning a £500,000 house down south doesn’t make you rich yet up north it’s a sizeable property. In another of your posts I mentioned a tax based on living area or square footage and you dismissed the idea without explaining why. Surely it’s fairer, then tax land owners a similar tax with a relief for productivity and creating jobs whilst taxing those who just sit on it a premium but with tax breaks for giving some up for housing

they changed it before to a pole tax everyone paid the same so a fair system but everyone complained it we got what we have now

If council tax was to change and become something based on the value of the property and/or the land it's ok, is it possible that this tax could also be passed on to the renter in the same way council tax is? I worry about renters again bearing the brunt for landlords.

bollox! council tax has f all to do with property and everything to do with service provision ,,we all pay for stuff we fo not always use, we pay fair share in fact we pay above and beyond, dont believe this woman !!!!

You’re obviously far too young to remember, but Margaret Thatcher tried to get rid of the council tax and she replaced it with a tax called the poll tax there was riots in the streets so that came the council tax , so it’s all like you’re saying get rid of it again, but what would you replace it with? You can’t just stop it. It has to be replaced by something.
