Victor Wembanyama is single handedly keeping a lot of NBA centers employed right now and I do not think people are talking about this enough. Every team in the league is trying to figure out how to guard Wemby and the answer they keep coming back to is that you need a big physical presence near the basket to bother him. You can foul him off the ball, you can get in his way away from the basket, but at the end of the day every roster needs someone who can stand in front of Wemby and make his life difficult in the paint. There is a reason OKC brought Isaiah Hartenstein back for another three years. Somebody has to keep Wembanyama from dunking 30 times a game and Chet Holmgren is not quite ready to be that guy yet. Get well soon Chet. And I think this same logic is exactly why Mitchell Robinson just signed a three year deal with the Boston Celtics despite his flaws. Mitchell Robinson played so well against Wemby during their matchups that the Knicks simply could not afford to keep him. He was getting offensive rebounds over Wemby. He was blocking his shots. But the most impressive thing was that Wemby just did not look nearly as large and unstoppable when Robinson was standing next to him. Mitch was also getting in his head a little bit and I am not usually one to celebrate that kind of thing but it was effective. Teams around the league are quietly stockpiling big physical centers right now because they all know they need at least some kind of answer for Wembanyama near the basket. Even if that answer is just a large unskilled presence that can tire him out for a couple of quarters. Not saying that is Mitchell Robinson.
