@arisofficehours: So the GRE is mostly a wash, but that doesn’t mean that the application process is any easier. #LearnOnTikTokContest #EduTokContest #HigherEd #GradSchool
here's my issue. if joining the academy as a tenured track professor is your goal, and it should be if you're going for a phd, you should be aiming for a top ten school. that's what a tenured track professor will most likely advise you. those schools use the GRE as a screening tool by necessity. those schools have average GRE scores in the 95 and up range. it's got some value as a tool for measuring logical thinking. the vocabulary part on the verbal is pure memorization. the writing part i believe will catch people who are going to struggle publishing.

But this is fabulous bc I don’t want to study and pay for a pointless test 🥹. However, my problem is I don’t have a writing sample because my masters didn’t have a paper. We’re only had an oral defense.

I’m currently preparing for the GRE as I plan to apply for an M.A. in Political Science. Since my undergraduate GPA was 2.48, I’m working to strengthen my application with a strong GRE score, along with the fellowships and internships I’ve completed over the years.
After earning my B.A. in 2021, I was accepted to graduate programs at American University and Arizona State University. I later realized that a fully online graduate program wasn’t the right fit for me as someone with autism, and I ultimately withdrew from Arizona State. That experience helped me better understand the type of learning environment where I can succeed.
I’m currently looking for a full-time position while preparing to apply to graduate programs in the next 2/3 years that are a much better fit for my learning style and long-term goals.

It didn’t make applications easier but it does cut the cost of applying. I got financial reduction for my GRE when I applied for my master’s and it was still 100$ which was still a lot of money for me at the time.

Way back in the previous century, I took the GRE to apply for an MA program in English language and literature. If I recall correctly, I barely got a 400 on the math part of the exam, but near-perfect on the verbal section!

The other problem with dropping the GRE is that some fellowships will still require it as part of their application. So if you want to apply for those, you might need it.

Ngl I’m glad I didn’t have to take it. I’m not the best test taker.

It sort of was replaced by nothing in my department. We were ignoring it for decades, only asking for it because the university said we had to. We are looking at the writing sample and letters just as rigorously as before.

I’ve completed three masters program and none of them required GRE, I did amazing in all of my classes. A test is not indicative of success I’m soooo glad it’s mostly over. Paying for an unnecessary test was a waste.

So glad the GRE is over. It truly was a cash grab for college board !!! A better eval is a work sample or essay on what you hope to do in grad school !

I am currently applying to a few stem based programs and the GRE isn’t required instead encouraged if you don’t have full time job or research experience for funding consideration.
