Okay, cool. I’m already not doing any of these things, but I’ll add them to my list of don’ts.

Speaking the TRUTH!! Also don’t pitch your book in the comment section of another author’s video.

Is this too niche. You are reminding me of the book tok Jen Hamilton 😂

THIS!!! Also, don’t promote / pitch your book under someone else’s post where they are talking about their own book.

I recently had two indie authors message me personally on how they would have wrote my book differently and what I should consider adding for book 2 and I swear I cried 😭 I’ve never been so insulted, the book is out, I literally can’t change anything 😭 also it’s my book

I feel like the first point would ideally have some grey area where authors are recognizing that their books are not for everyone, right? I 100% understand not bashing another author and being very careful about how a book is reviewed. But I feel like constructive reviews help people know what they’re getting into and one person’s “I’m not a fan of X” is another persons “oh I LOVE X so I *will* read it” moment. Maybe that’s a personal thing but I wouldn’t mind other authors simply stating what was for and not for them to their audience so far as my future book goes. It’s just kind of sad to me I guess and feels disingenuous to just suddenly only ever share 5 star reads when your 3 star review could help someone find a 5 star, you know? It almost feels like a lack of maturity in the space to have to stop reviewing to prevent drama down the line. (Obviously this is only talking about constructive reviews).

Also. ALSO. Don’t talk about a book and say yours is better because that one is bad. Since the haunting Adeline movie announcement I’ve seen SO many indies try to pitch their books as “he’s a 🍇ist. If you want a romance book where he’d never do that.” Or “she’s a terrible person. If you want an author who isn’t.” SUCH ICK

That last one though! I have been getting DMs from other authors who acknowledge me that they followed me because I am an author in their niche and then they tell me to buy their new book. Especially gross is when those folks have 50k plus followers and I don’t!

Yes, I agree. I refuse to do reviews. And the one & only time I offered a re-write on a sentence was when the author specifically asked how to re-word it to make it more grammatically correct. I don’t even want to DM anyone since most are fake & scams anyway!! In I think my first blog or two, I talked a bit about how authors should be supporting each other. We’re not in competition with each other. We really aren’t! And no one knows it all as it’s a learning process. Professional goes a long way.

Even as a reader, if a book isn’t a 5 star review for me, i just assume I’m not the ideal reader, this book just wasn’t written for me. 🤷🏼♀️

I agree with the last 2, and maybe I’m not understanding the first point well enough, but I think in order to attract readers that you feel would like your book, it’s good be honest about books you genuinely enjoyed and ones you didn’t. Now I don’t mean roast authors or their work or personal views because I agree, they’re your peers. But I think there is a is smart strategy buried in there that is a little more nuanced than “just don’t do it unless you love it 100%.” Can you elaborate on this more?

To carry on from this: I recently came across a post (maybe it’s trending) where an author said ‘what you’ll never find in my writing’ then a slideshow of her gagging and retching to common book tropes, and bagging them out. Eg. Multiple pov, enemies to lovers, slow burn. Fair enough to simply state you won’t find those tropes in this book, but to put them down was an instant unfollow
