Miu heard it the way most devastating things are heard: secondhand, in passing, from someone who didn't know they were detonating anything at all. It was two years after graduation. She was in her second year of medical school, running on four hours of sleep and hospital coffee, when she ran into Bam, a batchmate from the political science bloc, at a wake for a mutual professor's mother. They were catching up in the low murmur that funerals require, trading names of people they'd lost touch with, when Bam said, almost offhand,
Miu heard it the way most devastating things are heard: secondhand, in passing, from someone who didn't know they were detonating anything at all. It was two years after graduation. She was in her second year of medical school, running on four hours of sleep and hospital coffee, when she ran into Bam, a batchmate from the political science bloc, at a wake for a mutual professor's mother. They were catching up in the low murmur that funerals require, trading names of people they'd lost touch with, when Bam said, almost offhand, "Have you heard from Lena? She's already at the Carmelite postulancy in Los Baños. Can you believe it? I always knew she was devout but I didn't think she'd actually—" "Wait." Miu's coffee cup stopped halfway to her mouth. "What did you say?" "Lena. Santos. She entered the convent last June." Bam said it like she was reporting the weather. "Apparently she'd promised her grandmother years ago. Before her grandmother died when Lena was like sixteen, she'd give her life to God if grandmother's cancer went into remission. It did, for a while. And Lena never forgot the promise. Her whole family knew about it since high school. I only found out because my aunt's a Carmelite tertiary and she saw Lena's name on the postulant list." Miu set the coffee cup down before her hand could betray her. "She's been planning this since she was sixteen." "I guess so. Why, are you okay? You look—" "I'm fine." She wasn't. "I just didn't know." She excused herself before Bam. could ask anything further, walked out of the wake into the parking lot, and sat in her car for forty minutes before she trusted herself to drive, running the math over and over like a wound she couldn't stop pressing. Sixteen. Lena had made that promise at sixteen, four years before Miu had ever sat across from her in a library with a stack of policy briefs between them like a wall. Which meant that every single moment of the five months they'd spent circling each other, every mango slice, every held glance during Sunday mass, every stride down a dark corridor with their fingers loosely linked, every unbearable second beneath the fifth station of the cross. All of it had happened while Lena already knew, with absolute certainty, that it could never become anything. It wasn't panic that had made Lena disappear. It wasn't confusion, or a fleeting crisis of faith she'd talk herself out of in a week. It was a promise made years before Miu existed in her life at all, one Lena had never once mentioned, not even in the worst of their arguments, not even when Miu had begged her, standing in that rain-damp corridor, to just say the words. ‘You don't understand what I've promised.’ She had almost said it. She had gotten that close, and then swallowed it whole rather than hand Miu the truth. Miu drove to the Carmelite postulancy in Los Baños three days later. She told herself, the entire two-hour drive, that she wasn't going to make a scene, that she only wanted to understand, that understanding was owed to her after a year of silence dressed up as mystery. She did not entirely believe herself. [Continuation below ⬇️] #lalinalena #miunatsha #gl #lenamiuau #lenamiu
