@vinnith94: Across Malaysia and other countries within the Indian diaspora, the acculturation and amalgamation of deity worship into convenient and personalised forms has helped countless devotees establish a connection with their chosen deity. While this has brought many benefits, it has also created certain pitfalls. An image does not become a deity merely by being placed on an altar. It is deified only after the appropriate consecration (*pratiṣṭhā*) has been performed, whether according to Āgamic procedures or authentic folk traditions. As an example, there has been a case where an image of Kālī Mā in a home was not presided over by the Devi, but by a malevolent spirit. Likewise, spirits, bhūtas, and even jinn are sometimes employed by certain priests and shamans to create oracular experiences that mislead devotees. For this reason, not every shrine or temple is necessarily worthy of a visit. Devotion is essential, but discernment is equally important. Faith should always be accompanied by proper understanding and awareness of these potential loopholes. I have written a complete write up on this in www.mayiliragu.com. Please visit

Very interesting but my problem with this is the duality of bad and good doesn't exist in Sanathan all that is, is paramathma. Secondly we are in Kali Yuga, even just thinking of the name of God is as good as an elaborate prayer (mantra) to him. We are taught not to get to entangled with the form, the name and the path one choses for worship, but always remember only the creator receives all veneration. When we put God first, we can follow our heart not only scripture. even in our scripture so many stories of informal murthis made by devotees in devotion and later huge temple built there. Aum Namah Shivaya.🙏

Thank you for creating such an informative post. I restored shrines/temples here in Sri Lanka which is dedicated to Lord Murugan, Sangili Karuppasamy, Muneeshwaran and Jesus. The statues are close to 150 years old. I'm soon to restore two more shrines, one dedicated to Mariamman and the other to Kateri Maa. Your explanation of the possibility of spirits impersonating these idols is very interesting. Thank you again 🙏🙏🙏
