When I moved to NYC I learned VERY quickly that ma’am is not a universally polite honorific. Growing up in the south you got thwacked if you skipped a “ma’am.” It took a lot of practice to start using “miss” instead because apparently even the grandmas consider it a mortal insult to be called ma’am.

Worked at the cinema, a man came up to me and dropped a 100$ bill while saying nothing. So I said “wow thanks for the tip!” He got flustered and asked for the movie tickets like an adult

Fun customer service tip! (yes ik this is just a skit). Its best to avoid saying "I'm sorry" if a customer comes at you angry or upset because that implies fault. So, for the room issue, saying "I'm sorry" implies there is something wrong with the room even if there wasnt. Showing understanding and still offering the room upgrade is nice and still solves the issue without saying you (or housekeeping) were "wrong" which could fuel the customers behavior if they experience anything else "wrong" with their experience.
