June 6, 2023, at 02:50 AM, the Kakhovka HPP dam was blown up in Nova Kakhovka, Kherson region. This event became one of the most significant ecological and humanitarian crises of our time. The destruction of the dam led to a rapid and uncontrolled release of water from the Kakhovka Reservoir. As a result, massive flooding submerged dozens of towns and villages downstream the Dnipro River, leaving thousands of people without homes in a matter of hours and in need of urgent evacuation. The powerful water flow caused severe environmental damage, affecting national parks, fertile lands, and local wildlife, while a massive volume of freshwater poured into the Black Sea. Southern regions lost a vital irrigation system, fundamentally changing the future of agriculture in these areas for years to come. The dramatic drop in the water level also created major water supply challenges for many cities upstream. Now, the territory of the former reservoir is undergoing remarkable changes: the exposed bottom is rapidly overgrowing with dense willow forests and grasses. The area is gradually returning to its historical state, turning into wild nature and restoring the ecosystem of the Great Meadow that existed here before the dam was built.
