What looks like clouds “going behind the Sun” is actually an optical illusion caused by the way light passes through thin clouds and how cameras capture bright scenes.
Think of it like holding a flashlight against your palm. When the flashlight is pressed right against your hand, a lot of light shines through and your hand appears to glow. As you move the flashlight farther away, the light spreads out, so much less light passes through any given part of your hand and the glow becomes weaker.
Clouds work similarly. They aren’t solid objects—they’re made of tiny water droplets or ice crystals, so they are partially transparent. Thin or low-density clouds allow a significant amount of sunlight to pass through.
When a cloud is very far away, it subtends a much smaller angle and often appears thinner to the camera. Against the extreme brightness of the Sun, the light that passes through the cloud overwhelms the small amount of light the cloud scatters or blocks. The camera’s limited dynamic range then causes those thin, distant clouds to become nearly invisible. They haven’t gone behind the Sun—they’re still in front of it, but they’re no longer visible because the Sun’s brightness washes them out.
Meanwhile, clouds that are closer are usually larger in the frame, have more visible texture, and block or scatter more light toward the camera. They create a much stronger contrast against the Sun, so they remain visible. This difference in visibility makes it appear as though the distant clouds disappear behind the Sun, when in reality they’re simply becoming too transparent for the camera to record.
