@visit_zealandia: While it looks like kākā rip bark and branches off of trees for the fun of it, this is actually part of how they get their favourite snacks! Kākā use their curved beaks to strip bark from branches and access the sweet sweet sap — or scurrying wood-boring insects (like huhu grubs), underneath. 🐛 Aotearoa New Zealand's native trees evolved alongside these charismatic parrots, and have a different bark than exotic trees. In some cases, kākā ripping bark from native trees — such as pōhutukawa on Ahuahu/Great Mercury Island — has helped them grow and bloom, hinting at the design of Aotearoa's native ecosystem. 🌺 Living alongside the beloved kākā means embracing their boisterous and intelligent nature, and maybe planting more native trees! 🌳
