It’s not a free meal, it’s an expression of respect, hospitality, and generosity. We compete over what we consider virtuous regardless of it’s monetary cost. Accepting such gift is appreciated, but accepting it all the time without offering it back is not a quality we seek in our guests or friends

The polite (I know that sounds weird) thing to do is to give a bit of an argument. Some back and forth over it is typically expected. "No, come on, I've got it... No, we're not gonna fight over... Look, just let me pay, I've got this... Alright, ok, this time, but next time, you are my guest, that's the only way I'll accept." You aren't gonna win the argument, but it's part of the whole thing. And be willing to actually host next time, even if you'll lose that argument, too.
