@gatenerd: Love trains like I do? Spain and France's border is a train-lover's dream... Spain and France's rivalry goes back so far and was so heated that Spain built it's railroads to a unique specification. Nowaday's it's not too big of an issue, but the Iberian rail gauge caused a lot of headaches for decades. The history of how Spain chose to not use standard gauge like the rest of Europe. #History #geography #weirdborders #trains #spain #france
Spain is the second most mountainous country at Europe after Switzerland.

The 4 feet 8.5 inches the same width used by Roman War Chariots. They cut ruts across Europe, and the Europeans built their wagons to fit.

"they didn't trust the French" honestly that's entirely valid for much of western history

glad you're doing this series. I thought about why TV don't do this before the game, so people learn about them

The same reason Victoria and Queensland gave different gauges to New South Wales. New Zealand too, can’t trust those Aussies to not build a secret rail bridge across the Tasman sea from Sydney, they’d have to build it from Brisbane (which is just silly clearly, as the kiwis would buy all the state of origin tickets)

A very similar thing happens in Australia! Most notably between the states of Victoria and New South Wales. In the colonial era, states in Australia operated like independent countries so they never bothered to standardize track gauge as they assumed they would never trade with each other enough to actually need it. That decision has caused a lot of issues over the years and is part of the reason why it’s so uncommon to have a train that travels across Australia

And this is why traveling by train from Russia to China is really cool as you have to stop at the border so they can switch the wheels.

A fascinating thing about Spanish rail is that not only do they use the wide-gauge and now also use standard gauge for the high speed network, but they also have a large narrow gauge network.
