@theartcoach: Tap the link in my bio to start the drawing drills course. One of the biggest mistakes artists make when drawing trees is starting with the leaves. Start with the silhouette instead. Think of the canopy as one large shape. Once that overall mass feels right, use a loose, wiggling line to define the leafy edge. Then establish your shadow shapes before you ever think about individual leaves. From there, the texture becomes easy. A few scattered C-shaped marks are all you need to suggest foliage. Your brain fills in the rest. Only after the canopy is working should you add the trunk and branches, making sure they taper naturally as they rise and branch outward. That’s really the lesson. Draw the large forms first. Then the shadow shapes. Then the texture. When you work in that order, even something as complex as a tree becomes surprisingly simple.
