As someone who has been in HR for a few years, I’ve seen companies use temps or contractors for longer periods of time to save money. They don’t have to pay for the benefits and they can let them go.

FYI performance doesnt mater either. My mom worked for a company that was taken over 2x. Each time they tried to lay her off. She was the top sales person in the region for many years, won multiple contests even an iPad when they first came out. Thankfully she’s retired now

It can. To a degree. Some gov jobs (obv this admin did a number on fed workers and they were shafted but that’s an anomaly in the hx of this country), usually fed, state jobs, county and city. They have pensions still. And more worker protections (esp those that have unions).
