True, California has great weather...well...in the summer it gets hot as hell. Maybe it's a dry heat, but it's an intense heat, especially in the valley. PG&E charges a Hella of alot of money, sometimes the bill rivaling rent and mortgage payments. Homes are expensive as hell. Some people say they'd rather be homeless in California than live anywhere else. Let me tell you, I have yet to see a happy homeless person. California does have a lot of social resources (welfare) but there's alot of people depending on it and that number is ever increasing. Section 8 has a 5 year waitlist. On one forum, a homeless person that moved to California actually complained how long it was taking him to get help in getting a place to live. Social service entities are swamped and overwhelmed. Crime is getting worse in California too.

Retired & going to stay in California : I know a few people that retired & moved to other states & they regret it because of higher property taxes such as Texas, higher property insurance such as certain parts of Florida ,utilities are higher in some states ,their medical insurance isn’t that great( accessibility& cost ) which is a biggie for a few I know ,yes California state tax is higher & etc.. ; nothing is perfect; Cali has access to a lot more to do in our final years than most states ; and yes I probably wouldn’t move here to retire from those low wage states ,in southern Cali you can go skiing & swimming at a sunny beach in the same day :

California is stunning and I want to spend time there. Thus, I will fly there annually first class using the money that otherwise would have been taken by the state anyway. ;)
