I think the ending was great. For a man that said he was "god" the world showed him he's nothing close and never will be. By dying a mortal death his god ideology was dismantled by someone who was smarter than him.

ill never understand the argument that light deserved to win. by the end of the story light had betrayed every moral that the old light pre notebook had. while statistically bro helped the crime rate he litteraly became a hallow evil shell of his old self, all he wouldve done was fall deeper and deeper into corruption n lust for power

Light's story is poetic because it shows that while rulers and people in power can originally have good intentions no matter what humanity is doomed to become corrupted and consumed with pride. His God complex and pride were his downfall.
