It’s crazy how my algorithm is working. Alabama.disgrace has a similar conversation going on her page. I posted this over there but once again it’s hitting topic and showing where today’s problems stem from. I’m reading a book on James Longstreet and here is a quote from him in 1874. I apologize for its length, but it is exactly the problem. “Men can't all think alike, and the trouble with the Southern people always has been that they won't tolerate any difference of opinion. If god almighty had intended all men to to think just alike, he might just as well have made but one man…My opinion is that the only tru solution for Southern troubles is for the people to accept cordially and in good faith all the results of the war, including the reconstruction measures, the acts of congress, negro suffrage, etc, and live up to them like men. If they would do this, and encourage Northern immigration, and treat all men fairly, whites and blacks, the troubles would soon be over, and in less than five years, the South would be in the enjoyment of greater prosperity than ever.”

I live in Texas and my white daughter is dating an African American from Baltimore. He came to visit over the 4th and we got all kinds of weird looks when we went out for food. The South is SUPER racist. 💯

I'm in Texas. My grandparents, BOTH sides, were extremely racist. I was VERY lucky my parents weren't. Really didn't help on holidays. Not to mention my entire graduating class is fkn Maga!! Extended family, etc!! Its everywhere. The number of people I cut out of my life because of it!!! Man, you call them that & it pisses them off, ROYALLY!!

Can confirm I experienced this as well. I am born and raised in California and married a man from Georgia with good friends in Alabama. Every time i have visited its like an entirely different country then I had experienced living in SoCal. It’s so intrinsic to the culture too, woven so casually into everyday life and conversations that I’m not sure they even realize it for what it is.

I grew up in the Midwest and moved to Jacksonville FL after high school. In the Midwest, I never heard white people use the N word unless it was a song, and most would just not say it even then. I moved to Florida and HOLY SHIT, it was a massive culture shock. I had NEVER seen or heard racism like this until I moved to Florida, I had guys using the N word on first dates like it was NOTHING. I could not fucking wait to get the hell out of Florida, the south is a cesspool of racism.
