I wanted to complete this painting before I went to Rome (so I could come back and start work on whichever new idea had come up whilst I was away) but I started inventing other things that needed to be added to my never ending ‘to do’ list before I left. I also thought half way through that I wanted to paint it bigger and that I should just scrap the whole thing and start over. I’m much better at recognising both of these subtle self sabotaging moves my mind likes to play on me from time to time. (I went through a period of time a few years ago when I didn’t finish a painting for about 6 months which was definitely infinitely worse than whatever the finished product would’ve been) And I’m pretty resolute in finishing what I start now - which is why I’m nearly finished with this painting now. Because one of the most important skills I’ve learned is not how to lay a brushstroke perfectly the first time - or how to start a fresh with the right composition or size of canvas (you’ll never find the ‘perfect solution’ anyway). But learning how to dance with the painting I already have, to fix what I can, and to fall in love with all the other pieces I can’t change - quite the metaphor really
