@everyday_dog_trainer: How to navigate your puppy when they pick up something they shouldn’t and run away with it 🧦🐶 This can be super frustrating, but it’s also incredibly common. Puppies love to grab things like socks, underwear, shoes, or anything they know is valuable to you! The first thing to remember is don’t get angry. If your puppy has access to something they shouldn’t, that’s a management issue not a training issue. They’ve simply had too much freedom. Secondly, don’t chase them. The moment you start running after your puppy, you’ve just turned it into the best game ever! Chasing only reinforces the behaviour and makes them more likely to do it again. Instead, use movement to your advantage. Turn and move backwards while encouraging your puppy to follow you. Most puppies naturally want to come towards you when you move away. Once they’ve come close, offer a trade using a high-value treat or another toy. Let them willingly give up the item rather than grabbing it from their mouth. If you simply snatch the item away, you’ve taught your puppy that coming back to you means losing their prize. By trading instead, you teach them that bringing you stolen items actually pays well—which makes future situations much easier to manage. And finally, remember that prevention is always easier than cure. Keep tempting items out of reach while your puppy is learning, and you’ll prevent them from rehearsing the behaviour in the first place. #puppytrainingtips #puppy #puppy
