Thank you for this. As a Mexican American I had to learn this in college because TX high schools don’t teach this. We also suffered La Matanza of 1910-1920 where Texas rangers lynched any Mexican they found. Replying to @mom_tryingherbest If your insurance doesn’t cover their first dental visit before age 2 and you cannot afford the price your local pediatric dentist quotes, how can you work around the cost and still try to get baby seen by age 1? First, ask your pediatrician if they can provide fluoride treatments (they may be covered under medical insurance). Then ask the dentist if you can decline the oral hygiene instruction/cleaning due to finances (this is beneficial and in an ideal world you’d do it, but if cost is keeping you away I’d rather your child be seen for just the exam than not at all)! ➡️ Request to be seen for only an exam to be sure the child does not have early signs of cavities or any other problems that you want to be made aware of. If any are identified, you can then address them early rather than in 1-2 years when insurance might cover them but the problems have become severe and far more costly to resolve. I know pediatricians look in the baby’s mouth but they are NOT trained to identify early signs of mouth diseases like tooth decay. Cavities appear as white lines at the beginning stages and are easily missed because the teeth look wet or shiny. Many offices will work with you if the fees for all services are too high for your current budget. Ask about cash pay discounts or adjusting the treatment provided. They may say no, but it never hurts to ask these questions and get your child’s teeth examined early. Other low cost options are dental schools with pediatric dental programs or local free clinics and health departments. 🚩🚩 The ACA requires dental coverage for all children, so do some digging if your insurance is claiming children aren't covered until age 2.
