i lowkey hate when ppl do this. Of course they’re gonna teach the oversimplified version of complex subjects to middle/high schoolers. They’re barely paying attention as it is. Thats why college and higher education is important

we were taught this was a simplistic method to understand basic trait heritage, it wasn't a complete or definitive of complex biology.

it was just a GROSS oversimplification

Then you get to all these environmentally/physiologically activated traits…

so teachers in the US just don't add "this is a simplification" to their explanation? whut

My teacher explained us this. Like she always wanted us to know beyond the syllabus to the point that we understand how it actually works and can answer unexpected questions in the exams. Facts over syllabus.

This was made clear for us too in hs. We only used these for monogenic traits in plants. In humans, we only did this with blood types (ABO blood types are monogenic) and some traits (like red-green colorblindness) that are polygenic, but closely linked and can mostly be simplified or linked with sex chromosomes.

Y’all didn’t all learn about discrete vs continuous traits????

This is exactly why in the uk teachers have to use examples like cystic fibrosis or polydactyly instead of eye colour

Thank you for saying this! With using punnet squares it wouldn't make sense for why I have green/brown eyes (my eyes are mostly green, but brown around the iris) when my moms eyes are brown and my dad's eyes are blue :3

At least in my school we didn’t really use human genetics when learning about punnet squares we used like pea color or flower color I think we did do human blood types tho

Yeah that’s why we learn the other stuff in highschool and basic punnets square happens in middle school, idk if other schools do that tho
