@neuronpond: Anticipating the worst doesn't protect you; it just guarantees you suffer twice. Catastrophizing is a maladaptive survival strategy. When the brains fear center (the amygdala) is chronically activated, it hates uncertainty more than it hates actual danger. To your nervous system, a predicted disaster feels safer than an unknown outcome. When you over-plan and imagine every possible negative outcome, you think you are problem-solving. But biologically, the brain cannot tell the difference between an imagined threat and a real one. By visualizing the worst-case scenario, you are flooding your bloodstream with cortisol and adrenaline for a threat that hasn't even happened yet. You are reinforcing the neural pathway that the world is unsafe. The Fix: Anxiety thrives on the inability to tolerate uncertainty. You cannot out-think catastrophizing with more thinking. You have to physically teach your nervous system how to feel safe in the unknown by down-regulating your physiological state.
Stop trying to make people find faults in their own parents, you don’t know wrong Story

Research: “Catastrophizing may help you feel control while struggling w anxiety but it activates your amygdala as if you were being hunted”… … … Me: “Maybe I would stop catastrophizing if I wasn’t always right & if things stopped being so catastrophic… now, thanks to your advice I have to spiral at the thought that I’m actively being hunted” 🙃

The fix is you tell yourself, and get yourself to believe, future me is a bad ass. Future me can handle whatever happens to pop up. Convincing yourself takes practice, and saying it out loud helps.

I call this, "Preparing for the worst and hoping for the best". It's a difficult because it helps, but harms.

huh... ive always considered myself an optimistic pessimist. Basically I always expect the worse, that way when bad happens, I'm prepared. if it doesn't thats only a good thing, given my childhood, I think I'm gonna have to speak to my therapist about this.

My parents always said, “God will provide.” So I’ve been problem solving our family’s issues since I was a kid. No wonder why I have GAD.
