As a counselor, it’s disappointing every time that the estranged parent genuinely believes like their child just woke up and made an impulsive choice to cut them out of their lives just to hurt the parent. Every person I’ve worked with who has gone no contact with their parent(s) makes so many attempts to find a way to make it work, and feel so much pain when they accept that they have to make that decision. Just because that child may finally feel peace doesn’t mean there’s an absence of pain.
