He didnt attack the merchants directly with it, it was a symbolical tool of a Shepherd used to drive them out of the temple and using it for intimidaton. While his divine authority is what actually drove them out. (This is debated from confession to confession though)

The point is that when we use violence, we often let it rule over us and do not subordinate our violence to reason. Christ, being God, was able to use his violence without fear of becoming a slave to it.
