@cybersecuredad: ๐จ Your weather app can log every place you go. And data brokers have been buying that trail. Here's the story. Data broker Kochava pulled location data from hundreds of millions of phones and resold it. The FTC says that trail could reveal visits to health facilities, addiction recovery centers, domestic violence shelters, and places of worship. On May 4 the FTC reached a settlement that bars Kochava and its subsidiary from selling that sensitive location data without your clear consent, and forces them to let people request who bought it. One caveat worth knowing: it's a proposed order still waiting on a federal judge's final sign-off. But Kochava is one broker out of hundreds. These steps shut it off for the rest. ๐ iPhone: โ
Settings โ Privacy & Security โ Location Services โ set apps to Never or While Using, and turn off Precise Location where you can โ
Settings โ Privacy & Security โ Tracking โ turn off Allow Apps to Request to Track โ
Settings โ Privacy & Security โ Apple Advertising โ turn off Personalized Ads Android (paths vary slightly by brand): โ
Settings โ Security & Privacy โ Privacy โ Permission manager โ Location โ same thing โ
Settings โ Privacy & Security โ Ads โ Delete advertising ID, then turn off Ad topics, App-suggested ads, and Ad measurement One thing settings can't do: delete what a broker already holds. This settlement gives you the right to ask Kochava who bought your data and to request deletion, and Californians can send one deletion request to registered brokers through the state's DROP portal. ๐ฑ Everyone with a phone is part of this. Send it to someone you'd want to protect. Stuff like this is the whole reason CybersecureDad exists. ๐ #databrokers #locationprivacy #phoneprivacy #privacytips #ftc

What exactly do these databrokers want and do with our data? And the companies that buy it? How sensitive is the data collected?

Should stop allowing your keyboard strokes & transcripts to be sent to Apple and Google too.

Does the weather phone number still work? Iโd rather go back to calling the weather line.

All of my stuff default saves to Drive on my PC. To get it off there, would I have to manually move it to my C drive in Explorer? ๐ญ

utility apps monetize through data brokers. StealthOS runs privacy apps in an on-device sandbox where no personal data ever leaves the phone.
