the only thing it HAD to be was lapis, we know from the originals that rings like that require a specific type of stone, but that doesn't mean it needs to be a ring at all - katherine used a bracelet and elena's mom used a necklace

The stone specifically has to be a lapis lazuli otherwise it doesn’t work. All of the daylight jewelry is blue because of that :) In the books, if a vampire possessed a lapis lazuli stone, they would be protected from the sun (even without a witch’s spell). They carried it over to the show but changed it around a bit to require a witch to spell it to make them harder to obtain!

I think the rings did have to have that blue stone and it had to be a certain size for the magic to work right (lots of magical “lore” says spells need certain reagents) - so not much option colour wise there - but the fact that they made Elena’s ring look kinda dainty and cute around the gem tells me they coulda done the same for Caroline and just didn’t

Bonnie also failed to understand that Caroline becoming a vampire was her fault. Bonnie lied about deactivating the device which caused Tyler to crash the car and sent Caroline to hospital in the first place. Caroline had no idea vampires existed until she remembered all the things she was compelled to forget. she didn't have a clue what was happening to her. Bonnie was a horrible friend and treaded Caroline like crap for it.
