I wouldn’t consider myself a beginner gamer at all but I couldn’t figure out BOTW, I had to stop playing because every time I picked it up I would get so frustrated and disheartened by constant deaths and failures with puzzles, especially because I see it so often referred to as easy, beginner friendly, and ‘cozy’/relaxing to play. That didn’t line up with my experience of it at all :/

I think you should have qualified this with what decade of games you're looking at. Because calling BOTW the easiest Action/Adventure game is wild when you've got plenty of other Zelda games that were FAR easier to pick up. BOTW and TOTK both are the hardest mainline Zelda games that have come out.

This is a solid list! The only ones I’d push back on are easiest Action Adventure since BOTW can have complicated mechanics for someone unfamiliar with video games, I’d replace with just about any of the LEGO games. And I’d also swap out Detroit Becomes Human for The Quarry for its difficulty to keep everyone alive/uninfected. I’d love to hear what you’d say for the other genres! Specifically Horror👀

I have to be the only person who quit Zelda BOTW bc I kept freezing to death lol. So now I play Genshin Impact 😅 - DBH is one of the best stories (game?) I have ever experienced and it’s genuinely fun to rewatch bc it’s different each time.

I find Zelda games anything but approachable. I have severe ADHD and Zelda games feel like being in a constant state of "where the fuck am I supposed to go" and "what the fuck am I supposed to do". I do not have the patience for that. I do enjoy watching playthroughs of experienced Zelda players tho; they're not bad games, just not for me and I always thought it's just not for anybody who isn't used to riddles in games - but apparently I'm wrong lol.

an important thing to note is many new gamers need some level of explanation on the controls, if the game doesn't include that it's not the best entry point for newer players.

Not exactly a genre. But games you can listen to a podcast while playing hahah. (Maybe no speaking audio?) Hollow knight is one for me.

I actually fully agree with BOTW. My 59 year old mother, who hasn't played video games since Pacman, had double foot surgery and was laid out for awhile. She bought a Switch and played BOTW as basically her first ever video game. She looked up a lot and got help from me for boss battles, but she fully completed that game. The way difficulty scales and exploration is so intuitive makes the game great for beginners.
