@distilledscience: UPDATE (July 14): Michigan officials now say evidence points to lettuce and other salad greens as a likely source — but no specific product, grower, or supplier is confirmed, and other foods aren't ruled out (Reuters, 2026). Nationally: the CDC reports 1,645 confirmed cases, 5,100 cases that "require further analysis to confirm". Michigan alone reports 3,309 cases (normal is ~40 a year). Greens are the current suspect. Buy whole heads over pre-washed bags/mixes, toss the outer 2–3 leaves, wash the inner leaves under running water, and cook when you can. When washing, physical scrubbing and agitation is what is more important than any type of soap, vinegar, baking soda, alcohol, etc. I said frozen produce is "much better," which needs some nuance. Freezing in industrial freezers below -25˚F might work, but home freezers are far less effective. A 2000 outbreak came from frozen raspberries in a wedding cake. Cooking from frozen is totally safe. Heat (158°F / 70°C) is the only confirmed kill. We don't know if vinegar helps much beyond the agitation. A routine stool panel won't catch it. If watery diarrhea drags past a few days, ask for a Cyclospora test BY NAME. It's treatable. Why so hard to trace? Unlike Salmonella (which clones itself into near-identical DNA), Cyclospora reproduces sexually and reshuffles its genome, so standard DNA matching fails. CDC uses a probability-based tracing system instead (Barratt et al., 2022 · DOI 10.1093/infdis/jiab495), and it's actually at least 3 species (Barratt et al., 2023 · DOI 10.1017/S003118202200172X).
