@workingwithmonolids: Replying to @Ari i’m really surprised by this! i love the US since it’s way more kid friendly & I just assumed the cup situation was because everyone mistook her for a toddler.
Most restaurants in the US give kids cups with a lid and straw until about 10 at least.

as i server, i cant even trust a 8 year old with a regular glass. too focused on their tablet to have the motor skills to pick up a glass without spilling.

I still miss no spill cups/ lighter silverware/ cups, and even double handled ones. my dad bought me double handled mugs before he passed cus my muscle spasms mean sometimes I drop things or splash all over the place without the assistance

My 12 year old still occasionally gets cups with lids. Granted he is half Asian and on the smaller side. I still claim he is 10 for the Chinese Buffets kids price.

UK - we started with an open cup around 1yr old. Lil man was drinking from a pint glass using one hand by 2yrs.

I feel in other countries kids are exposed to more glass and ceramic glasses and dishes. We are in Germany and my son only drinks from glass where and real plates in his preschool starting at age one. And his preschool in America everything was plastic with a lid, including milk cups. They are entire thing is that if it breaks, it takes a lot to clean since they would have to sweep vacuum and then mop every time glassware would break.

Around here in Texas if you look like a "kid" you'll get a lid, but if you look like a "teen" or older you wont. (could be 10-12 before you stop getting a lid) or just tell them you want an adult sized drink

In the US, we've actually got teachers and child development experts begging us to stop using sippy cups far younger than most people do. I started handing water to my daughter in an open cup about the same time she started walking, now she's 4 and can handle any sort of glass. But I had the benefit of getting that lecture before I had her, most parents genuinely have no idea and are just avoiding the extra mess. We be tired.

Some restaurants give kids plastic cups and straws here. 😅 Other times, they get the same as the adults.

I think it might also be regional in the US because when I lived in a northern state my daughter was drinking from a lid and straw free cup at 1 but when we moved down south that was incomprehensible by everyone.. I truly have the belief that kids a lot of kids can learn anything if you believe in them.

While most kids do learn to handle open cups and glass pretty young most restaurants still do that for kids and even tweens sometimes (mostly chain places but some local spots too). Adults are dumb but kids are way more likely to accidentally spill stuff/bump a glass. Also can depend on things like drink size.

In the Philippines, restaurants either give kids kid cups or adult cups, it depends if they have kids set menus with kids plates and cutlery.

I think it’s super different restaurant to restaurant! And a lot of places do it depending on which drink you order and if you order a kids size. Like if you order a chocolate milk even if you’re an adult they’ll give you a kids cup unless they’re running low, and if you order a fountain drink off the kids menu vs adults!
