Music is something we hear, not something we see, and that's why it's possible to be phenomenal musician without learning how to read music. And that's also why reading music can be a detriment if you don't know what you're looking at. One of the most common misconceptions is that you must only play the chord that's written in each measure. But a musician who can't read wouldn't ever come across that problem - they already know that music is fluid and isn't divided into bars. You can play the next chord early. Or delay the current chord. Hell, get rid of the written chords altogether and substitute with your own chords. When it comes to soloing, it's no different - outline the next chord early or delay the current chord, or outline your own added chords. Music isn't visual - it's auditory.
