@jahankalantarofficial: Anybody can fall victim to a scam and have their life turned upside down. We need more people understanding that so that we can deal with the shame that comes along with the feelings of being scammed, because it stops people from seeking the help they need #Legaltips #sydneylawyer #jksays #notlegaladvice
So I’m really not texting with Chris Martin from Coldplay?

Yes! There’s an Australian woman who shared a scam she was a victim of this week, and the comments were so hostile and snarky. Sharing it was a really great thing- it seemed to help get her a positive result and it definitely would have brought awareness to others. Scammers thrive in darkness, so airing them in sunlight is the best disinfectant

This is so true......my Aunty is currently in the depths of one and it breaks my heart. Her husband, both parents and her only sibling ( my Mum) have all passed away. When I was helping her fill out the online report I asked her how this all happened. She broke down and said "I just wanted to feel special to someone and not be alone anymore. Why am I not good enough?" Even as I write this, I'm crying.
These scammers know how to pray on people's vulnerabilities and that's what makes it so devastating!!

I was a victim of a scam. The scammer had virtually cloned the original website (only difference is, looking back it had .au at the end), and cloned a PayPal checkout portal. It looked very legitimate. I had even posted the web address into scam checkers, as I’d never purchased from them before, it came back safe. All was well, until they took control of my PayPal (unable to get it back), and overdrew my account by hundreds. Thankfully, the bank was able to reverse it this time ❤️. I’d never been scammed before, it shocked me

My first rule is: I never respond to anything immediately, especially first thing in the morning or when I’m tired. If anyone rings me about something financial, I just say I am in the middle of a meeting and that I will call back later. If I think it is genuine, I get the number from the company’s actual website. I try to keep my financial stuff to one day of the week when I can check things out at my own pace.

I know multiple different IT specialists who got caught out by phishing links. It can happen to anyone if the right thing catches you at the right time. No one is safe.

one of the worse part of being scammed is the shame it goes with it. it's irrational but I felt ashamed and depressed. bankers were very mean.

These scammers have had decades to hone their skills. They may not understand the psychology behind it, but they know what works. One of their leaked manuals says: Nobody is unscammable, it’s just not the right script for that person

I fell for one five years ago and will never fall again. They got all my personal info somehow and placed a purchase order for iPhones through my provider. The genuine provider sends me a confirmation code while the scammers are calling me, then all they had to do was find any way to get me to tell them the code, which I did. Stupid of me yes, but the provider was partly to blame as they processed a fraudulent order so I got a full refund. I gave police all the details including the delivery address they put on the order (a house somewhere in western Sydney, forgot exactly)

Every time I’ve heard that someone has fallen victim to a ‘sophisticated’ scam, I read the details with interest and it’s never sophisticated at all. Never give out details to anyone over the phone and never go online and change your details because your ‘bank’ told you to. If the banks suspect dodgy activity on your account, they’ll freeze it immediately.
